And the van drives on the road. No reduction in roads. If you are saying drive less and get the train etc I get it but the cost of an efficient road system doesn't change and taxation will still meet the cost just from less road tax. Should be an objective in itself but don't buy the subsidy angle.

Motoring taxes do not cover the full social costs of supporting private motoring. There's no particular reason why they have to - the benefits of motoring are realised in other taxable areas - but it is absolutely subsidised.

I'd rather see a basic individual allowance of cheap fuel with the cost increasing the more you use. And the same with energy. People who didn't drive at all could even sell on their allowance. And the allowance could be varied according to circumstances.
