But if you have a conscience you can infer what it isn't: peacefully sitting around until the opportunity arises to vote Green or whatever.

I never met my paternal grandfather, because he died aged 60, 5 years before I was born. Part of the reason he died is because of all the dust he'd inhaled working in the mines, where he saw friends of his killed. In the 2000s the state gave my dad a couple of grand as "compensation." What a joke.

Two centuries or so of digging up coal, lives ended in disasters, lives cut short by the effects of working underground for 40 years. And what do we have to show for it. Nothing, really. All that wealth created by workers here went into the hands of the ruling class. And now? Post-industrial decay.
