For those curious how this can happen, some motherboards aren't built to deliver 5V through their RAM slots (RAM runs on at most 1.4), so trying to run RGB off of them can overdraw voltage and kill the board. Also, trying to write to an RGB controller can accidentally write to firmware and brick RAM
