Across species, there can be striking differences in social structure! I study a cichlid fish with dominant males that are territorial, colorful, and reproductive. Subordinate males swim with the females but (usually) don't reproduce. But then male status can also completely reverse! Multiple times!

And fish can definitely communicate - visually through body movements / position, through touch, chemically (smell), and even vocally for some species.
