@blvdsubway.bsky.socialConstruction of the 4.9 mile-long State Street Subway (now part of the CTA Red Line) began in 1938 near Chicago Avenue. After five years of construction, Chicago's first subway was ready for operation and opened to the public on this day in 1943.
Show PostVery exciting to see both Chicago (assets.metra.com/s3fs-public/...) & Philly (wwww.septa.org/initiatives/...) developing plans for all-day, two-way, frequent service on their commuter rail lines.
Show PostI agree! To get where I need to go (without a car) I need to sacrifice speed (the 14), reliability (taking the Boulevard Direct bus or regional rail and then waitinngggg for the 14) or safety (walking on exurban roads with no sidewalks/crossing high speed offramps). Not great options.
Show PostMy office is about 1/4 mile from the mall. I live in (very) center city. Because the walking options to take the Boulevard Direct are very dangerous, I take the 14. it takes 86 minutes on a good day.
