And all the hotels and airlines do it so there’s no choice. Unless we want to take the time to drive of take the train, which is not feasible for most people for longer distances, we have to put up with the terrible ways the airline industry is allowed to treat customers.

Exactly my point. Hotels and airlines can legally do this (and other absurd things like your cancellation.) Maenwhile, it’s even harder for theatres to make money and it would be criminal for them to oversell. The travel industry is allowed to do so much that is wrong.
