It was a decision by her Dean, John Fraser, who said she was not an expert in Māori health inequity. It's of note that he didn't offer up anyone to replace her. Probably an attempt to get her to back off her legal action.

Also, an expert witness can give opinion testimony which a non-expert witness cannot. So VC could have presented her opinion as evidence for consideration rather than being restricted to facts. (Or something like that).
