I think an added factor is the internet also allows the person who is cut off to still have some sort of access much more easily than in the past

like most things my intuition is that the internet has made this worse - more parents have gone down some awful social media rabbit hole these days to the point that their children feel like they need to cut them off so, of course, they complain about it in the newspaper
