It can be all of the above. But if he was a boyfriend of Indy, who already told Pen he wasn't taken this year, then he was very likely a manipulative abuser. It's very easy to see in a comic but much harder IRL because abusers are usually very good at taking over the narrative.

This! But I'd add, be a bit trusting of others and yourself. If you distrust everyone on principle, someone who confirms your bias will be able to wheedle in. If you try trusting others and look at their words and actions and, like you said, fact check you can avoid a lot of issues.
