And frankly, if after trying to help people understand the benefits of the euro, they still won't accept it as part of joining the EU again and be a committed member, then I don't think we're ready to join the EU again. The EU deserves better than that.

Instead of debating “should we do what Canada is doing” (which is, so far, unclear), the debate could be: “how has the world changed that the EU and Canada are considering this, and how do we want to deal with this situation?“ Just a suggestion.
