We don’t know where the barriers are between “things that have consciousness” and “things that do not,” or indeed if those barriers exist at all. We don’t know if consciousness is binary or a spectrum. We don’t know if it’s a product of complexity or energy or some physical property.

The reason the AI consciousness debate is so annoying isn’t that AIs are conscious (my view is that they’re probably not, for the ten gazillionth time), but that saying they are CONCLUSIVELY not conscious resolves a bunch of specific questions about consciousness that are very much unanswered.

It is absolutely bananas that one of the most prominent anti-AI experts in America is talking like this. Talking to ChatGPT isn’t like doing heroin or downloading child porn. It will not hurt you and has no ethical valence. It will help you understand the nature of something that is now endemic.
