I’m reading The Craft: How the Freemasons Made the Modern World by John Dickie, excellent book. The Masons are interesting for being a fairly secular group that wasn’t doing any of the Satanic stuff the Catholic Church and others portrayed them as. But it’s also a great container for schemes.
