I am not talking about a serious conversation here. I am talking about saying hello and can I pay on card being enough for him to think I couldn't possibly be English, in a resort that is almost entirely white English. 3rd worst country in the world imo.

tangentially related: yesterday I spoke to the guy in the shop opposite my white English dominated hotel in my rudimentary Spanish. when I said I was English he said he'd thought I was French, because English people never speak any Spanish to him

this was like 2005ish, so I was quite a baby and did not understand a damn thing about the world… still, though. Guy was abusive and gross.

for about a month I worked at a comic book store owned by a guy who was every negative stereotype of a guy who owns a comic book store. This dude was full-on Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, but without any of the redeeming qualities. And Korean. It was genuinely hard to believe he was for real.
