The opening chapter of Britain at Bay is a tour de force. Allport lays down his thesis early: the British thought of themselves as a simple, gentle people who wandered accidentally into a war, and they promptly fought that war like a bunch of absolute psychopathic bastards.

Britain at Bay and Advance Brittania are the best British histories of the Second World War about right now, and I'm not just saying that because Alan is here and knows how to find me if I don't. They're really good!

Finally finished @alanallport.bsky.social's two-parter on the Second World War from a British perspective. I might write a proper review later if anybody cares about my opinion but a) he's a stylish writer and b) it's nice to read a history that is comfortable with the ambiguities.
