Not wanting them to sell merch is really a take I just do not get, like even in a lot of cases where shows are made specifically for merchandise the show can still be a good or even great show. But I don't even think that's what the indie animators are doing, they just make the show and sell merch!

The merch is truly baffling to me because thats, like, pretty explicitly how the shows we grew up on got made, WELL into the 2010s SymBionic Titan famously got cancelled because they never got an offer for a toy deal that wasnt too sexist to make toys of the girl robot

i think that shows like Yogi Bear and Rocky & Bullwinkle, cartoon shorts like Gerald McBoingBoing, even something like Dexter's Laboratory, the blueprint is there for economical animation that really small or single-person teams can produce. Those techniques were invented for a reason!
