One of the defining characteristics of authoritarian governments is an informant regime. You get people to inform on their neighbors, co-workers, shopkeeps, etc. Informing becomes a way to bully, settle scores, or simply make a person feel in control.

Again, I think this is true in general. I've voted for a lot of people who I consider really poor on many issues. But I don't think it's wrong for people to have certain lines that they won't cross. I know it's harder for you over there with only two relevant parties.

It's up to the politician to appeal to the voters and offer them something they can stand behind, not the duty of the voter to support someone who wants to ruin their lives.
