In 1860, a local landowner tried to interfere with public access to a ruined church & graveyard on his land in Killone, Co Clare. Letters to the paper give us a sense of the local reaction - ‘for he who wars with the handful of dust at his feet is no friend to the living’ (Munster News, 14 Jan)

The funeral of Oscar-winning actress Brenda Fricker is to be held in a Dublin church this morning. Fricker (81) died in Our Lady’s Hospice in Dublin’s Harold’s Cross on 16 July after a period of ill-health. jrnl.ie/7122631
