—writing for lore, cinematics and dialogue is the bare minimum IMO. it's easier to find opportunities if you have a base-level understanding across quest, missions, implementation and more technical narrative design. What a scriptwriter in film does, is standard. What a game writer does is not.
Show PostWe don't have standards. We don't have roles/titles that mean one and the same. One project may think they need a writer, when you chat with them you realize wait if you need help with quests/missions that's more quest design than writing. So, writers ideally have to be equipped with skills—
Show PostIt's similar in that it is referral-first. If you've worked with someone before, and they were impressed with your work, they're more than likely recommending you across other games. Where it differs is there's an unclear "spectrum" of technical skills needed in game writing
Show PostA little bit of #AMA: I've been getting questions on how I'm able to find #narrative and #GameWriting contracts, so I'm putting a blog/LI post together. What are some questions you have about finding short-term opportunities in ND/game writing? I'll try to answer as best as I can in the blog!
Show PostReally, the problem you're describing is one the big studios have invented for themselves. They have increased their own risk on every film with the kind of spending these people are used to nowadays.
