If I choose to die, because, for example, I have terminal cancer or ALS or progressing Alzheimer’s, that decision has nothing to do with anyone else. It’s not a pro-death decision. It has to do with my own life. No one ought to be able to make it.

My wife's cousin is dying of cancer. She's going to visit her in North Carolina next month, and asked if I'd like to come along. I always think of Tolstoy's Death of Ivan Ilyich when talking with people who are facing death - that often, they just want to speak about death, but everyone avoids it.
