U.S. politics have always been chaotic and wildly partisan. In 1856, Southern pro-slavery Preston Brooks beat abolitionist Charles Sumner with a cane on the senate floor. Rather than hurting Brooks' rep, his supporters were so delighted they sent him walking canes as gifts. How far we haven't come.
