Absolutely this. Probably because imagining a successful IPO is basically “upside to underwriting case is coming true” for sponsors which makes it really hard to reward ecm desks that stress risk management, ability to rescue derailing processes and other pesky downside aspects like that
Show PostGreat introspective writeup by an ecm banker but there just is no way to overstate how terrible the valuation slides in ipo pitches are for expectation management / strategic decision making… and an aborted IPO is still better than a failing listing
