@catherinespooner.bsky.socialExactly - my grandad would be turning 109 in December for god's sake! And he was only 21 when the war started. These people knew better than any generation after just what xenophobia and hatred lead too. They were the core of the international Labour movement post war.
Show PostMy granddad's carers in his final years were his friends, and brought him gifts from visits to their home countries. My gran's had lesbian mates she'd trained as a mechanic with. Both born during WWI. No such thing as 'of their time' - bigotry is always a choice.
Show PostI'm so sick of these narratives suggesting that it's some kind of neutral or positive heritage investment to behave like a raging bigot. It's ahistoric bullshit. My grandparents met trans people, gay people, immigrants, and hatred or fear was not some inherent character of their generation
Show Postmy grandparents were the generation who fought WWII and just one of them was a racist homophobic dick (from Barnsley, iykyk). The others were loving and supportive of all their neighbours, of the NHS, progressive taxation etc BECAUSE they'd seen the alternative!!
Show PostOff to spend the rest off the weekend with Margaret Cavendish 📖 See you on Monday
