So you wind up with these very strange scenes where someone using f-slur a bunch is clearly meant to be funny, but also they have to get beaten up because we can't let homophobia slide. Just a fascinating little time capsule.

Watched Goon, a 2011 hockey comedy with Sean William Scott, the other night. It's from that fascinating micro-era of pop culture where it was no longer OK to be homophobic, and protagonists had to be established as open-minded. But also screenwriters had not evolved past using "gay" as a punchline.
