I was just telling my wife about a family record of a child freezing to death in the middle of the night at the edge of the (one) family bed in an unheated house; late 19th century, up near Telemark. Not a disfavored or unloved child. No deliberate cruelty. Just rural poverty in Norway in 1870ish.
