This might be a reach, but I feel the failure of the right to understand shows like The Boys parallels the naive textualism and originalism embraced by many conservatives. In both cases, there is complete ignorance of subtext, which is a fundamental part of communication.

The Boys perfectly illustrates the difficulty of using irony in modern America. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to create a show that repeatedly satirizes Trumpism, only to have some Trumpists end up idolizing the morally despicable characters that were designed to mock them.
