Maybe you’ve heard: every font is free! Since fonts aren’t subject to copyright, you can legally ‘pirate’ them if you use a specific loophole! ...except that’s not really true. I’ve seen this claim repeated quite a lot recently, and it’s missing some pretty important nuance. 🧵 A thread:

And if you’re ever unsure about what a font license does or doesn’t allow, you can always ask! Aside from That One Big One, most type foundries are small studios run by people who want to help.

Let’s return to that ‘all fonts are free’ idea: under US copyright law, typefaces (the shapes) are not covered by copyright. That’s true. So, the idea goes, as long as you’re copying only the shapes, and not the font, you’re all clear.
