In psycholinguistic research, form-related facilitation may be misattributed to lexical and semantic activation. Our paper provides a 7-step framework for evaluating these potential confounds in crosslinguistic stimuli, including an automated method for identifying and evaluating cognate synonyms.

Crosslinguistic word pairs that are not direct cognates, like English ‘sick’ and Spanish ‘enfermo,’ may have hidden ‘cognate synonyms’ where a closely semantically-related word (‘infirm’) shares etymology with the word’s translation.
