…compartmentalize a legal existence away from a social/colloquial one. And I wholly reject framing legal barriers as a cause of emotional distance; my clients know my social self but not my legal one. The barrier I enforce is between my friends and gov't to protect me AND my friends FROM my gov't.

Respectfully, I vehemently disagree with this. For authenticity, you need not use your True Name as a legal identity. For convenience, sharing a legal name is by definition an unnecessary risk. Violet isn't a phony name. It's what both clients and civ friends call me. But NOT what my gov't does.
