Woodland natural colonisation. This plot in Monks Wood Wilderness Experiment is now 30 years old. Began as semi-improved grassland next to ancient woodland. Left = 10 yr progress: nice grassland & shrub/tree saplings. Right = 20 yr later: dense woody cover, grassy glades, future ancient woodland.
