Buying a shared ownership flat was the worst financial decision of my life. It’s left us trapped for the foreseeable future, limiting our life choices and career opportunities. We’re told our only way out is to become landlords, which simply isn’t something we can afford to do.

It’s basically as you have said. Each devolved nation has different rules, but in England, it is a house-building initiative run by Homes England to make “affordable” homes and usually run by social housing providers at “80% of market rent”. The aim is to push people into shared ownership.
