A reported assassination attempt targeted Maj. Gen. Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of Russia's 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, in Saratov region this morning. The attacker allegedly shot him twice, in the head and abdomen. Varpakhovich is reportedly in critical condition; the gunman escaped.
