US garment workers helped pioneer multi-ethnic labor unions, which united people across racial, religious, gender, linguistic, and cultural divides. Also native-born citizens and immigrants. I think about that sometimes when I see people suggest such divides are unbridgeable.

The problem I wrestle with is how to go about this. The postwar German approach of Streitbare Demokratie, where the state moves aggressively against antidemocratic movements, hasn't seemed to keep the AfD at bay, and I don't trust the US state apparatus with anything close to that kind of mandate.

The pundits keep telling us that we need to reign in polarization, that we need to restore some sense of comity and decorum in our politics. The flaw in that analysis is that we need to remove a whole lot of people from public life before such a thing is even possible.
