I can’t think of a better way than grammar-translation for forcing comparison and analysis of languages but it’s the wrong tool for getting enough input and practice to be able to understand and speak L2. But maybe for Sanskrit chatting with ancient Brahmins isn’t your goal?! How’s it going?
