Fear, mostly. They're taught from birth that it's everyone for themselves and nobody will ever help them. They don't have community to fall back on. When they fall, they have to beg for soup and people will deny them shelter or even a park bench. The privileged spin it as self reliance.

I'm an "American" whatever that means these days. All I can say is to make sure that you tell your children to NEVER MARRY AN AMERICAN. I don't know more than three people here that I trust. The odds of having a bad experience is too much not in their favour. The majority here sucks.
