after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"

It's time for "Alec is a Cranky Tech Curmudgeon" again! So I just used a fancy vending machine which has a nice touchscreen UI and has a huge "Pay with Your Phone!!" banner. Nowhere does it mention it takes contactless cards. No card logos or anything like that. Just Apple and Google Pay logos.
Show PostI am Not Comfortable with the idea that we just accept that, for instance, older people who aren't up-to-date with this stuff (or perhaps are not able to stay up to date) should have a worse experience existing as a human than young folks who understand, can afford, and adore their phones.
