Really looked like Van Aert was the beneficiary of experience there. He put in a massive effort just over the top of the final climb to get in front of Del Toro, knowing it's so hard to overtake after that moment.

... because the time will come when their results and value is well below their contract but the rider has several million incentives a year to stay on and try their best even if it's not working for the team. Is there a "Froome clause" to prevent this?

Mads Pedersen the latest rider to have an endless contract, or at least until sporting retirement. Can see why teams want to retain figurehead riders who deliver results + leadership... but would love to know small print for when their abilities fade, how the team a can gently unload them...
