Any ire here should be on the trillion dollar industry that has successfully assumed credit from computational techniques that some people still insist on referring to as AI after 4 years of all this. Not laypeople noticing their life is being made worse by products that have been labeled as "AI".

I think you can do both. AI companies suck, certain technologies would have sucked at point of invention regardless of who made it. I think you could argue machine learning protein folding algos can be useful while also saying AI image generators suck and circular financing companies are terrible.
