It’s not just that GOP Senator Ron Johnson is aping Russian propaganda, which is quite bad on its own, but that he’s aping absurd Russian propaganda that falls apart under the slightest scrutiny, all to justify blatantly illegal aggression and mass killing, against a democratic US partner no less.

The Budapest Memorandum was a signed treaty. In 1994, Russia, along with the US and UK promised to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Why would an off-the-books verbal promise in 1991, which might not have actually happened—Gorbachev swore it didn’t, but even if—outweigh a signed treaty?

The US and the West welcomed Russia into the community of nations after the Cold War. Investment poured in. The G7 turned into G8. The idea that Poland, Estonia, etc. forming their own foreign relations was so unfair to Moscow that Russia is entitled to murder Ukrainians 20 years later is insane.
