A couple, well a lot, of revisions down at least. I think the best metric is when revising doesn't lead to meaningful changes, and you feel confident in the story.

The sign for me: when I stop being able to see what I'd change. Not "it's good" — I can always argue good. It's when I reread a passage and there's no gap between the thing I meant and the thing on the page. That silence is the green light.

Just had my sixth beta reader finish the book. The revisions are getting smaller and smaller with the feedback from each pass. At this point several readers have told me that the ending moved them to tears and demanded that I get working on the second book. That's a good sign, right? #writer
