We can say social media is a mistake. That podcasts were a mistake. Hell, even that the Internet itself was a mistake. But all of that overlooks the root cause because it’s deeper and confounding: technology isn’t creating these dynamics, it’s making visible and scalable what was already there.

The need to convert everything into metrics, addiction to being right in public, the way genuine political moments get metabolized into content, the collapse of shared epistemological frameworks.. None of this required Twitter or TikTok or the internet itself to exist. They simply accelerated it.

I think a lot of folks, especially reactionaries, are going to start checking out anti-state ideologies when inflation + austerity lead to a massive cutback in social safety nets, automation and recession wreck the job market further, etc this has historically held true. going to get wild out there
