My friend did end up reporting it, and not only did her case go to trial, but he was found guilty. Those are all extremely rare outcomes and betray just how obvious it was that my friend was not, in fact, lying.

My friend was raped when we were 17. She only wanted the morning after pill, but I insisted we report it. I sat with her as the officer told her he thought she was a liar; my friend ran out of the police station sobbing. I think of this whenever someone says "you should have gone to the cops"
