The large difference in breathing frequency across species may be less problematic than it seems, because respiration may not simply impose its own frequency on intrinsically generated sleep dynamics. Instead, it may bias when network events are most likely to occur and interact. (2/3)

Great question! I’d expect a similar organizing principle in animal models. @nikolaskaralis.bsky.social showed very elegantly in mice that breathing coordinates cortical DOWN/UP transitions with hippocampal ripples and shapes ripple-related hippocampal–cortical communication during sleep. (1/3)
