That's the extent of russias moon efforts, they never got cosmonauts past LEO, unlike the USA. Soviet N1 manned lunar launch vehicle was a failure once Ukrainian rocket scientist Sergey Korolyov died in 1966. He achieved all the space firsts for the USSR. Sputnik & Gagarin. Alt-Text has details.
Show PostA launch vehicle is a "getaway vehicle", right ? Soviet N1 manned lunar launch vehicle, serial number 7L on the pad, November 1972. 110 metres tall (360 feet), just 3 feet "shorter" than the US Saturn V. Unfortunately this one explodes after less than 2 mins. Not a successful getaway. 🙁
Show PostThe russians don't have any heavy lift launch vehicles to get to the moon or beyond, like the N1. They also let Energia (rocket for the Soviet space shuttle Buran) rot at Baikonur after the USSR collapsed. All they have is Soviet era "Soyuz" & "Proton" - light lift & medium lift launch vehicles.
