Tsunamis are low-frequency, high-impact hazards with the ability to kill tens of thousands in just hours. State/territory-level tsunami programs are vital to increasing tsunami resilience across the US. To do this, though, we have to invest time and money. Our communities deserve nothing less.

Despite WA-led efforts urging Congress to require NTHMP be funded, NOAA remains silent as to the fate of this vital program. This lack of an answer is NOT acceptable. NTHMP partners have made too much progress toward tsunami risk reduction across the US to wash it down the drain to save money.

Without NTHMP, the future of WA’s tsunami program is grim. We will be forced to drastically cut the risk reduction support we provide to our partners, including: community outreach/education; hazard modeling, mapping, and mitigation; alert and warning; and response services.

NTHMP funding also supported projects crucial for understanding WA’s tsunami risk, including tsunami casualty and building loss estimates, a vertical evacuation structure needs assessment, 5 tsunami maritime response and mitigation strategies, and an evacuation route assessment. mil.wa.gov/tsunami
