I was polled the other day and they read me a support statement that ended with "supported by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers association" and I answered "strong oppose, I oppose anything Howard Jarvis supports" and I made the pollster laugh.

Because they never understood how it works, but they recently paid off the mortgage

I think it’s becuase a lot of them pay the property tax via a bank escrow account so it’s just wrapped up with the monthly mortgage payment. Then one day the mortgage is finally paid off but the property tax bills keep coming. It’s stupid but I think this is why.

I speculate that a lot of people paid their taxes via their mortgage and don't know the difference between taxes and interest. When they paid off the mortgage they thought that whole bill would go away. Meanwhile, they, of course, see no connection between local services and taxes.
