One of the many things I love about Newcastle are the random bits of city wall still standing between Westgate and Gallowgate, behind the station and near Manors station. Yes York’s & Chester’s walls are more complete but the bits of Newcastle’s walls seem more remarkable somehow.

That a metro system would be built in a northern UK city involving underground tunnels and stations is supposedly an impossible, unrealistic idea from an unserious mind. Meanwhile, Newcastle with 13km of bored tunnels and 9 underground stations built 13 years after first plans:

Apart from the specific issue here, it never ceases to amaze me how little motivation councils have for protecting cycling infrastructure from drivers using it as free parking. If you've spent the money on it, why waste that investment on parking? It's not even generating revenue.

Until this week there was a fence along the pavement here. It's just been removed as the new house on the right is nearly finished and the garden has been levelled ready for grass. Drivers have decided it's fine to drive over the pavement and through the garden to avoid the filter.
