And after all that, they somehow landed on this absurd conclusion: Don’t trust America. But trust Donald Trump. That is not patriotism. That is a cult of distrust. And it is one of the most ridiculous, dangerous, and embarrassing things I have ever watched happen in this country.

They were told not to trust anyone, not to believe anything, not to respect expertise, not to accept facts, not to honor institutions, and not to believe any election that does not give them the result they want.

Patriotism is not wrapping distrust in a flag and pretending it is love of country. What they built was not conservatism. It was a movement of suspicion, grievance, resentment, and self-inflicted gullibility.

And the most insulting part is that they still call this patriotism. Patriotism is not hating every American institution until only your favorite strongman remains. Patriotism is not sneering at teachers, doctors, veterans, scientists, immigrants, judges, cities, allies, and democracy itself.
