    A march with no further threat behind it is a *parade* that may manifest into incremental acknowledgements or adjustments but will not spur an indifferent power into capitulation and meet exactly the demands being made. *Rioting* works, and moreover, that work in France is not yet done.

    The message you should take from this news is that rioting is a valid tool in the protest arsenal and that you should continue to keep your ears fixed to what the autonomous, organic student rebellion is saying—not to what the government offers them, not to what orgs or social media offer you.

    As most of the people consuming the news and applauding the French gov’s concessions are Americans, this “protests work” framing should be understood as a pacification tool: You have not participated and will not, and will likely wonder why protests are continuing after the concessions offered.

    Rioting is, of course, a form of protest. But the rhetorical trick of “protests work” is not to pull people into understanding the function of rioting and its power, but instead to elevate marching and chanting as equal to the power of quantifiably destructive, aggressively disruptive mobilization.

    Students say the concessions aren’t enough—but if you saw the news, you’d likely be inclined to be satisfied with the fact that the government made any concessions at all, and would further buy into rhetoric about “protests work” that puts marching with signs on the level of rioting and looting.
