    Thinking about how my grandma’s care home workers, working hard thankless jobs, had all kinds of inside jokes with her. When she died they talked to me and my dad about how much she meant to them and consoled us. How monstrous do you have to be to make care worker’s lives *harder*?

    The whole principle behind Shabana Mahmood's proposals is repellent. The idea that we value humans by their pay rate rather than its need for society. Why should a care worker wait longer for citizenship than a banker, or a nurse longer than an HR manager?

    The average British person would be radicalised if they were forced to endure the rampant rent-seeking of the (outsourced to within an inch of its life) British immigration system.

    That's before we get to the indignities of proving your relationship, the text messages to screenshot, the event tickets together, the wedding itself, every scrap of your life is peeled over by someone from Sodexo or Serco who is hating every moment. An utterly despicable process.

    Of course, then you have to go through ILR, which is another £3k, then citizenship which is another £2k. So, we're talking nearly £15k. You can also pay extra at each of these to fast track it, that's another £1k each time, so if it's urgent which it probably is because you're now married, £18k.
