    That lack of wider financial support after the BL suffered what was probably a hack by a foreign power leaves it in a tough position. Problems relating to staff pay or commercialisation of reading rooms are a symptom of this underlying problem that we don’t properly fund our national library

    I'm obviously fine with a project coming in late, and I say that in all of my check-in emails, but communication is super important! I've got books that are 3, 4, 7(!) years late. That's why I acquire beyond my quota minimum. I know this will happen. Just *tell me* where you are with things!

    Academics: if you are behind on a deadline, whether it's a book chapter or a manuscript for your publisher, please please please just get in touch with them and tell them where you're at. I've got several authors under contract who haven't responded in YEARS and I just don't understand that.
